Failing floodlights spark urgent appeal to light up Rugby Town FC

AN URGENT bid to light up the home of Rugby Town FC has been launched as the new season gets underway.

The club’s 30-year-old floodlights are nearing the end of their life and need to be replaced.

Rugby Town have successfully secured a £29,000 grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund – but this only covers half of the cost.

The Rugby Town Vice Presidents’ Section is appealing to supporters to help raise an extra £5,000 – over £2,000 of which has already been donated.

Having obtained planning permission for the scheme last month, work to take down the existing eight floodlight columns and replace them with a brand new four-column modern lighting system has begun.

The new floodlights – which will better illuminate the pitch, improve supporters’ views and ‘future-proof’ the club if it gets promoted to higher divisions – should be up and running within the first few months of the season.

Vice Presidents’ chair Mike Yeats said: “Any help we can get to fund this scheme will release funds for other projects at the club and ensure we can do as well as possible on the field this season.

“The response so far has been fantastic. We have under two weeks left now of the scheme so let’s see if we can reach that target as we go into an exciting new season.

“All donations are welcome, no matter how big or small.”

Rugby Town opened the new season with a hard-fought 2-1 win in The Emirates FA Cup at local rivals Coventry United at the Butts Park Arena on Saturday (August 5). They kick off their league campaign on Saturday (August 12) with an away fixture at Sporting Khalsa.
