BACK with a bang, Rugby’s biggest fireworks display returns this weekend to mark 67 years of fund-raising for local charities and good causes.

Rugby Round Table will host the annual Firework Spectacular at Whinfield Recreation Ground in Clifton Road on Saturday (November 3).

The show has grown with the times since it was first held on November 5 1951 to raise money for local kids who had lost their parents.

This year visitors will be treated to a funfair, food and drink, live music from Massive Happy and Stupid Boots, and a fireworks finale.

Gates open at 4:30pm, live music starts at 5pm and the fireworks finale starts at around 6.15pm.

Tickets cost £5 in advance or £7 on the gate. Under-3s get in free. All profits go to local charities and good causes. Visit www.rugbyfireworks.co.uk for tickets and more information.

A DONATION from the money raised at last year’s display has funded equipment to help premature babies.

The Round Table bought much needed privacy screens for the neonatal ward at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW).

Andrea Davies and Jo Bradshaw from UHCW’s neonatal ward, with Brett Salisbury and John Campbell of Rugby Round Table.

UHCW Neonatal Sister Andrea Davies said: “The lightweight, mobile screens are far easier for nurses and families to use, and can be pulled around the ward to provide much needed privacy for families and their babies.

“We are very grateful to Rugby Round Table, and those who attended last year’s firework event, for supporting us with this new equipment, which currently falls outside of the NHS budget.”

Presenting the screens, Rugby Round Table chairman Brett Salisbury said: ”The donation is one of many made from the funds raised by Rugby Round Table at last year’s Fireworks Event, and we’re delighted to be able to support our local neonatal unit who provide special care for premature babies born in the Rugby area.

“It’s very rewarding to see the money which we raise being spent with our local communities in mind, and we wouldn’t be able to make these donations without the people of Rugby supporting our fireworks event each year.”
