Fly-tipper fined £400

Rugby Editorial 17th Jan, 2020   0

A PILE of rubbish was dumped on a grass verge by a Lutterworth man who did not have room for it in his bin.

The culprit has been fined £400 after he left the rubbish in Gilmorton Lane near Lutterworth last November.

The rubbish, which comprised household waste, was traced back to the resident following an investigation by Harborough District Council.

When questioned the man said he had too much rubbish to go in his bin, so he illegally disposed of it himself.

He was issued with a fixed penalty notice after admitting the offence under the Environmental Protection Act

Coun Jonathan Bateman, Harborough District Council’s spokesman for regulatory services, said: “Once again we have fined someone who has illegally dumped waste in our district. Fly-tipping is a blight on our countryside and will not be tolerated.

“Our successful Tip Off campaign, with support of the public, is helping crack down on those who are prepared to flout the law and I am pleased that we have achieved yet another successful investigation.”

The Tip Off campaign, which helps people report cases of fly-tipping and provides information to help with investigations, has resulted in a number of prosecutions and fines.

In November, the council reported an unprecedented 27 per cent fall in fly-tipping incidents in the district in the last year.

And figures extending to December showed an even further decline of 31 per cent.
