Football comes home as Avon Valley students put through paces by Rugby Borough FC coaches

FOOTBALL came home to a Rugby secondary school when students were put through their paces by coaching staff from Rugby Borough FC’s academy.

Liam O’Neill, the academy’s director of football, visited Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College to work with 45 students from Year 11, joined by coaches Will Grocott and Joe O’Neill, and student support officer Sam Pocknell.

During the session the coaches put the students through a number of training drills before being splitting them into teams to play against each other.

Liam, who has played professionally and semi-professionally for teams such as Mansfield Town, Cheltenham Town, Banbury United and Evesham, told the students about the opportunities available to them to learn and play football at the academy.

The students were also given an insight into the day-to-day life at the academy and were told about some of its successes from recent years.

Headteacher Blake Francis said: “It was great to get outside and see our year 11 students in action with the coaches from Rugby Borough Academy.

“Speaking to the students, it’s really positive to hear that a number of them will soon be attending trials, with a view to starting at the academy next September.”
