Golf club helps hospital charity overshoot fundraising target

A FUND-RAISING appeal to improve facilities at Rugby’s hospital has scored a hole-in-one with its latest donation.

Rugby Ladies Golf Club has raised over £3,700 for the Friends of St Cross Sapphire Anniversary Appeal.

The appeal has raised £81,000 over the last 18 months – overshooting its original target of £65,000.

Club captain Sue Tura nominated the Friends of St Cross as the chosen charity for her tenure when the appeal was launched just before the pandemic struck.

She handed a cheque to Doug Jones, Chair of the Friends of St Cross, at a presentation in the Club House.

Sue said: “My time as Captain was certainly challenging under the circumstances, but enjoyable at the same time. I wanted the money raised to go to a local charity and as I used to work at the Hospital of St Cross, I had first hand experience as to how well the Friends of St Cross support the hospital services.

“A combination of raffles, visitors and members competitions, an auction that was supported by local businesses, and the immense generosity of the members of Rugby Golf Club culminated in the amazing amount raised. I am pleased that this will go towards supporting the local hospital.”

Doug said: “In spite of the obvious difficulties due to the pandemic, the fund-raising efforts of the ladies section can only be described as sensational.

“It is only because of the generosity and unwavering support of clubs, groups and individuals such as Rugby Golf Club’s ladies that we are able to support the Hospital of St Cross and the Community Service in Rugby in the way that we do.

“To have raised such an incredible amount during such a difficult time is truly remarkable. On behalf of the Friends of the Hospital of St Cross I cannot thank Sue and the ladies of Rugby Golf Club enough.”
