Green fingers crossed as care home enters national garden competition

GREEN fingers are crossed at a care home whose residents and staff have entered a national gardening competition.

Anya Court Care Home is going up against 18 other Hallmark Care Homes across England and Wales for the annual Hallmark in Bloom contest.

Judges visited the Dunchurch Road home to assess its gardens in categories including best visual appeal, best celebration on the day and best resident engagement.

Their visit was accompanied by a 1940s themed celebration with live entertainment from vintage singer Cathy Brady, while cream tea was served in the gardens.

During the event, resident Gerald Dyer, 81, was presented with the Carry on Gardening award in recognition for his horticultural efforts.

He said: “It was a complete surprise to win this award, but once it sank in it was a great privilege to receive it.”

The care home’s lifestyles team leader Sue Mitchell said: “We had a wonderful time at Hallmark in Bloom and we felt extremely proud showing the judges our gardens this year.

“The residents, alongside the team and gardeners, have worked so hard over the past few months to make the gardens a beautiful and peaceful haven for people to enjoy.”

The results of the company-wide gardening competition will be announced in September.
