Green Rugby parishioners pick up sustainability award

GREEN parishioners in Rugby have picked up a sustainability award.

Members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bilton were presented with a Live Simply award for their sustainability efforts.

In recent months there has been a focus on a wide range of activities, from buying Fairtrade goods and green energy whenever possible to supporting the Rugby foodbank and the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development’s (CAFOD) overseas projects.

Each month relevant ideas are printed in Live Simply Tips and posted on the parish website www.sacredheartrugby.org.uk to help others follow their lead.

Live Simply chair Michael Floyd said: “We’re delighted with the award.

“Pope Francis had made it clear that caring for the environment as well as people in need is integral to the Catholic Church.

“Interviews with Sacred Heart parishioners revealed just how many good things so many people are doing. Turning off lights when not needed, recycling, avoiding waste, growing food in an allotment – and so many other things, which put together can make a positive impact.”

Looking ahead, in addition to all on-going projects there will be support for refugees housed in Rugby and for a parishioner whose family and friends are in Malawi directly helping to improve school facilities and resources.
