Gun-toting Rugby robber hunted by police

A GUN-TOTING robber is believed to have struck twice in Rugby over the bank holiday.

A taxi driver picked up a man and woman from the train station in his Toyota Avensis estate around 9.30pm on Sunday evening.

He drove them to York Street but when he arrived at the end of the street, the man threatened him with what is described as a silver-coloured ‘old-style gun’ before taking his wallet, phone and cash box. Both then ran off in the direction of the Round Gardens flats.

The gunman was in his late 40s with a long ginger-coloured beard and glasses. He was around 6ft tall and of skinny build. The woman was in her mid 30s, 5ft 3in tall, and of a large build.

A hotel night porter was then threatened with a gun during a robbery around 4.30am the following morning.

He demanded the porter at the hotel on Brownsover Lane open the safe. The robber was given a quantity of cash by the porter before he fled in the direction of Brownsover.

The robber was then wearing a black jacket with grey sleeves, dark bottoms and dark boots, with a wooly peaked hat. He was described as of scruffy appearance and a dirty face.

DC Stephen Mobbs from Rugby CID said both the taxi driver and the porter were left shaken but unhurt in the robberies.

He confirmed they were investigating the possibility both robberies were linked and appealed for anyone who may know him or have information to contact police.
