A PREMIERSHIP rugby coach scrummed-down at his old school to tackle men’s health issues.

Head coach of Harlequins Mark Mapletoft returned to Lawrence Sheriff School to kick off its annual Movember campaign.

To mark the start of the campaign, head of careers and alumni Amanda Warde invited Mark, who played for Rugby Lions, Gloucester Rugby, Harlequins and London Irish, to come in and speak to students about the importance of looking after themselves both physically and mentally.

Amanda said: “We invited Mark back to Lawrence Sheriff as our students always benefit from hearing from past students and their views on current topics.

“As a past student, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to our current students which is invaluable when talking about men’s physical and mental health issues.”

Sheriff’s head of languages John Gaffin leads the campaign by organising fundraising events to raise the importance of conversation about men’s health.

He said: “It is something I feel incredibly passionate about given that Movember tackles issues that directly impact on the lives of our students as young men.

“In particular, Movember raises awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity.

“The other associated goal is to help men to live happier, healthier and longer lives by encouraging them to check in regularly with friends and family, take exercise, and to talk about their problems more openly.”

Head teacher Peter Kent added: “The whole school is very proud of Mark’s achievements. We are very grateful to him for returning to school to raise the boys’ awareness of such an important issue.”

Staff and students hope to exceed the £2,000 they raised last year through various activities such as a ‘blue’ non-uniform day, sports events and competitions.

Staff members participating in the Movember fundraiser – calling themselves the LSS MoBros – are inviting sponsors to support their moustache-growing efforts. Visit moteam.co/lss-mobros to donate.
