Harris pupils glimpse behind the scenes during Parliament visit

‘A REWARDING experience’ is how a Harris Church of England Academy teacher described his students’ visit to the Houses of Parliament.

During a tour of the Palace of Westminster, a group of 32 Harris pupils watched debates in the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

They learned how Parliament functions during an interactive activity session organised by the Parliamentary Education Unit at its state-of-the-art education centre.

And they met Rugby and Bulkington MP Mark Pawsey, who answered their questions about his work and life in Westminster.

In 2017, nearly 300 pupils from the constituency visited Parliament, and Mr Pawsey said he was keen to see more of the town’s youngsters take up the opportunity this year.

He said: “I hope the pupils from Harris enjoyed their visit and found out some interesting facts about what MPs do. Through the unique and interactive workshop that the Parliamentary Education Service runs, the pupils were able to explore the role, process and history of Parliament and to find out how they can engage more actively in our democracy.

“It is important Parliament is accessible to everyone, including schools, so they are able to engage with our political system and become involved in politics from an early age. I hope to welcome many more classes from Rugby and Bulkington to Parliament over the coming months and look forward to answering their questions about the role of MPs.”

Harris’ Head of York House and Safeguarding Lead William Glendon-Doyle said: “Our Harris students thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Houses of Parliament in London.

“To be able to tour the Palace was quite a privilege and viewing the Houses of Lords and Commons really inspired our students.

“One of the many highlights was being there while a live debate was in progress in the House of Commons where we were all able to watch from the public gallery. This gave our students a real insight into British politics and how Commons actually works.

“I would like to thank Mr Pawsey for kindly giving the students an insight into the life of an MP. A great and rewarding experience was had by all.”
