Have your say on Warwickshire's rights of way

Rugby Editorial 27th Feb, 2024   0

RESIDENTS are being urged to have their say on Warwickshire’s rights of way.

Warwickshire County Council is seeking views on all aspects of the county’s rights of way – which gives people a legal right to follow a specific route across land even if privately owned.

Rights of way in Warwickshire are broadly split into four categories – footpath, bridleway, byway and recreational unclassified road.

There are around 1,700 miles of public rights of way across the county. These are found in both rural and urban areas and are important for a range of activities from exploring the county to travelling to work or school on routes that are, generally, away from major roads.

WCC is calling for people’s thoughts to draw up an improvement plan for the routes.

For residents who use Warwickshire’s public rights of way, WCC wants to hear about their experiences and how important they are in their daily lives.

For residents who do not use them, WCC wants to know what prevents them from doing so and what, if anything, could be done to encourage them to use them.

WCC transport spokesman Coun Jan Matecki said: “Our extensive network of public rights of way are one of the many things that make Warwickshire a great place to live, work and play. These vital active travel highways support a wide range of activities from exploring the county’s natural wonders to allowing our residents to get to and from workplaces and schools.

“We have had a fantastic response from residents so far and I hope to see as many as possible taking the opportunity afforded by this engagement exercise to tell us what they think about our public rights of way which will allow us to prioritise the improvements that will keep them relevant and useful for generations to come.”

The consultation closes on April 7.
