Husband who broke wife's nose avoids jail sentence

A MAN who broke his wife’s nose when he hit her during an argument in the car on their way home from a shopping trip has escaped being jailed.

Zdanowski of Stowe Drive, Rugby, had pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to wounding his wife Beata Zdanowska during the incident in July, and was sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for two years.

Prosecutor Alexander Barnfield said the couple had been married for four years and had two young children.

But in the six months leading up to the incident in July they had money worries because 31 year-old Zdanowski had not been able to hold down a job, and he had begun drinking too much.

On July 25 they took the children with them when they went shopping in Rugby town centre, but they began to argue about money and Zdanowski stormed off with one of the boys.

His wife finished the shopping and was walking home with their other child when Zdanowski arrived and picked them up, only for then to start arguing again in the car.

He stopped the car and struck her in the face, causing her nose to bleed, and Mrs Zdanowska got out and asked a passer-by to call the police.

She was taken to hospital where her nose was found to be broken and had to be re-positioned under general anaesthetic.

Mr Barnfield pointed out four days later Mrs Zdanowska had made a further statement to the police withdrawing her support for a prosecution, saying she wanted to work towards a reconciliation.

And Andrew Molloy, defending, said Zdanowski, whose wife had accompanied him to court, had no other offences of violence recorded against him, and there was no history of domestic violence.

“The relationship had been going through a turbulent time because of financial worries. There had been significant debts mounting up, which led to intense arguments. Much to his regret, on this occasion things got out of hand.”
