Inquiry to decide Magna Park expansion plan

A PUBLIC inquiry has been scheduled to decide whether to revive a controversial plan to double the size of Europe’s largest distribution park near Lutterworth.

Magna Park owners IDI Gazeley wants to build up to 420,000 square metres of new offices, storage and distribution units, a logistics institute of technology and other facilities at land at Mere Lane, Bittesby – altogether the size of around 103 football pitches.

Harborough District Council initially approved the planning application in November 2017, but it was called in for review by full council, and the proposal was rejected by 12 votes to 10 the following January.

A Government Planning Inspector will will hear IDI Gazeley’s appeal against that decision from Tuesday March 26.

IDI Gazeley says the expansion would create 5,800 jobs.

But the Magna Park is Big Enough campaign group argue it would harm the surrounding countryside, including the medieval village near Bitteswell, and choke rural roads with traffic.

The inquiry is scheduled for up to eight days from Tuesday March 26 at 10am, and will take place in the Council Chamber at The Symington Building in Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough.

The public can attend and may speak subject to arrangements made with the Inspector.

Capacity is limited to around 100 people. Members of the public will be admitted on each day on a first-come-first-served basis.
