Inquiry to hear public opinion on Rokeby field's proposed Town Green status

THE PUBLIC will be invited to have their say on a bid to preserve a playing field earmarked for two new schools.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) will hear Rugbeians’ views on whether to register Rokeby Playing Field as a Town Green.

In August, WCC gave the Education Funding Agency (EFA) outline planning permission to build the permanent home of Rugby Free Secondary School (RFSS) and the new Rugby Free Special School on the Anderson Avenue site.

But campaign group Sustainable Hillside and Rokeby Education (SHARE) wants the field to be protected from development forever under Town Green status.

SHARE member Linda Hanson said: “If our application is successful, this field will be saved for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.

“We argue that local residents have established a right to use the field for ever as they have been using it for games and exercise for over 20 years.”

The group’s chair Sally Chant said she was delighted the group’s case would be heard in public.

She added: “I would like everyone who has used the fields in the last 20 years – or who is prepared to contribute towards our legal costs – to get in touch.

“Rugby Borough Council agrees that our area is already short of open space and we need to fight to keep what we have.”

When the EFA’s plan was approved in August, a WCC spokesman said: “School planning officers at WCC welcome the decision of regulatory committee to approve two new schools on the Rokeby site in Rugby.

“Rugby is in real need of school places and these two proposed schools will add much needed capacity in the area.”

The public inquiry will be held at Arnold House, Elsee Road between November 9 and 20.

THE SECRETARY of State has rejected a request for the EFA’s planning approval to be ‘called in’ for review, stating that it should be determined by the local planning authority.
