A BOW-and-arrow-wielding man who sparked a police lock-down in Rugby town centre last month has been jailed.

Andrzej Adrian Wisniewski, 33, of Avon Street, was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at Warwickshire Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (August 8), having previously pleaded guilty to the offence.

Armed police and a helicopter rushed to Rugby on the evening of Wednesday July 18 after they received reports of a man near the railway station with what was initially described as a crossbow.

Wisniewski was found at his home and arrested.

He admitted carrying the bow and arrow having brought it two weeks earlier. He was taking them back from his brother’s house to fire in his garden. He said he did not realise he was committing a criminal offence.

Inspector Dave Kettle said: “I don’t know if Mr Wisniewski fancied himself as a bit of a modern day Robin Hood, but I do know that his actions led to a significant armed police response and to parts of Rugby being locked down.”
