Large stretches of M6 closed due to serious accident

A LARGE stretch of the M6 is closed after a serious crash with delays of two hours reported.

Initially the motorway was shut between Junction 3 (Coventry) and Junction 2 (for the M69).

The closure has now been extended. The carriageway is currently shut between Junction 4a (M42) and Junction 2.

National Highways was alerted to the incident at around 4.30am. The route is expected to remain closed throughout this morning.

Traffic officers are at the scene with Warwickshire Police, and are working to release traffic caught within the closure as soon as possible.

Highways officers advised drivers to allow extra journey time as there are currently more than 10 miles of congestion on approach to the closure at J4a, resulting in a 90 minute delay.

They warned those caught in the congestion were likely to be there for some time before they can get things moving due to the nature of the incident.

Diverted traffic is advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol between junction 4a – junction 4:

  • Leave the M6 at junction 4a and join the M42 headed northbound towards junction 9
  • Exit the M42 at junction 9 and take the 6th exit to re-join the M42 headed southbound
  • Continue along the M42 southbound, leaving at junction 6. Take the first exit onto the A45 headed eastbound.

Pick up the hollow square diversion symbol between Junction 4 – Junction 2

  • Continue on the A45 eastbound to its junction with the A46 Tollbar End
  • Take the exit onto the A46 northbound and continue to re-join the M6 at junction 2.
