A LONG-haired youngster who sacrificed her distinctive locks has been praised for raising over £760 for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Lauren Osborn was invited to the flaying doctors’ base in Baginton as a thank-you – and to learn more about their life-saving work.

The 12-year-old Avon Valley pupil, whose mum Sarah is a hairdresser, was inspired to donate seven inches of her hair to the Little Princess Trust after one of her mum’s customers did likewise.

As well as raising vital funds for the Air Ambulance, Lauren donated her hair to the Little Princess charity – which provides wigs to youngsters who suffer from hair loss during cancer treatment.

She said she wanted to do something selfless to help other people and the community – despite being nervous about saying goodbye to her long hair.

She said: “At the start, I was nervous because I did not know what I would look like with short hair.

“After the cut I was a little upset because I lost most of my hair, but I left knowing I had done something to help someone else. I am very pleased with the results!”

She was thrilled to meet the pilot and crew during her visit – and got to sit in the pilot seat of the helicopter.

She said: “I learned the pilots don’t just sit around drinking tea and eating biscuits, they sit at a computer planning a route and what they need to avoid such as a balloon launch. They also have an amazing way of how to work out the flight time.

“It feels amazing knowing that I have helped two different charities which will help other people.”

Mum Sarah said she was bursting with pride – and gobsmacked by Lauren’s selfless act.

She said: “We are overwhelmed with pride at such a selfless act, Lauren is becoming a very lovely young lady. There are just no words!”

Alison Davies, headteacher at Avon Valley School, said: “As a school we’re very proud of Lauren as this is a superb example of thoughtfulness and kindness.

“Lauren has chosen to support two very different charities, which both do wonderful work.”
