Leader of church partnership steps down after seven years

Rugby Editorial 15th Jan, 2018   0

A VICAR has reflected on his seven years in charge of a partnership between local churches which has helped feed and shelter thousands of Rugbeians, as he steps down from the role.

Revd Dr Michael Bochenski has stepped down from his role as convenor of Revive Rugby – which links together over 50 churches and organisations across the Borough – to be replaced by Revd Sheila Bridge.

Dr Bochenski, who will also retire as the Minister of Rugby Baptist Church in July, said Revive had encouraged churches and organisations to serve local communities in a variety of new and exciting ways during his tenure.

He said: “We have opened, through Hope 4 Rugby, the new Hope Centre on Newbold Road, and watched it become a safe haven for dozens of new homeless, hungry or badly housed people each year.

“Together we have also launched a winter shelter for some 50 or so rough sleepers each year, which has just begun its seventh year of operating.

“We have become a pioneer venue for an interchurch approach to debt counselling via Christians Against Poverty. And we have seen the work of Rugby Youth for Christ blossom, making a tangible impact on schools and children and young people across the town.”

Quoting an Old Testament psalm, Dr Bochenski added: “The Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes.”

Revive Rugby administrator Diana Mansell said: “By co-operating together as churches we have been able to help over 17,000 people through the amazing work of the Rugby Food Bank.

“We have seen a wonderful ecumenical chaplaincy team in care and residential homes emerge under the Gift of Years umbrella, and helped a Learning Centre for excluded teenagers begin its work in Rugby too.

“And a growing Rugby Street Pastor team has gone out compassionately in to the streets of Rugby, each Friday and Saturday night.”

Revd Sheila Bridge, Vicar of St Peter and St John’s Church, added: “I’m delighted to now be co-ordinating this organisation working alongside many inspirational leaders to make a difference in our town.”
