Lit fireworks thrown at Rugby primary school children

FIREWORKS were thrown at children at a Rugby primary school, forcing it to close for a day.

Travellers have been blamed for throwing lit fireworks near the young children as they tried to leave Rugby Free Primary School on Monday November 6, and again at 11am the next day

Head teacher Susan Milewski decided to close the school on Wednesday November 8.

She said: “The decision to close is because I need to be sure that the children can get in and out of the school site safely.”

Inspector Allison Wiggin of Rugby Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Police in Rugby have received reports of fireworks being let off close to Rugby Free Primary School on Monday and Tuesday (November 6 and 7).

“Officers have attended the area and will be continuing to provide reassurance patrols as we work closely with the school and the council to reach a resolution.”

Police added the travellers were on council land – meaning a county court order may have to obtained before they can be evicted.

Defensive barriers were installed near the Bailey Road School early last year after travellers trashed land and intimidated parents into keeping their children at home.

They set up camp on Central Park Drive near the school three times in 2015, leaving litter including human and food waste, and damaging play equipment in the school playground.

The school had to pay for repairs to playground equipment and hire 24-hour security to prevent further disruptions.

Police currently only have the power to move travellers off a site when there is a suitable alternative for them to move onto. It is up to the local authority to obtain court orders to move camps off public land – but the process is slow, with an average of three weeks before an order is approved.
