'Litter Hero' inspiring people to keep Rugby tidy

A ‘HERO’ is inspiring people to keep Rugby tidy in her role as an ambassador for a national environmental charity.

Catherine Gall applied to become a ‘Litter Hero’ for Keep Britain Tidy because of her passion for cleaning up and fighting litter pollution.

She said: “I became involved because we all want to live in a healthy world – and litter ends up in our waterways and goes into the ocean.

“This damages the health of our ocean, wildlife and sea life – and will eventually wipe out species if we aren’t careful.

“Climate change is also a big part of why I got involved – I wanted to do more!”

Ten months later, she has reflected on her time in the role, and feels she has helped to improve the litter issue in Rugby.

“A highlight was challenging a local construction site on their waste management, and being able to see action taking place,” she said.

“We all have a part to play to keep Rugby tidy, so anyone can get involved. If you’re walking the dog or taking children to the park, if you see litter pick it up and put it in the next available bin.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said she was delighted Catherine was supporting the LitterHeroes Ambassador programme – funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery.

She said: “While we should all care for the environment on our doorstep, there are some people who go above and beyond – supporting and inspiring others with their passion and infectious enthusiasm.

“Thanks to support from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, we are now able to give a helping hand to some of these amazing individuals as they inspire others and take action to clean up our country.”

There are now more than 250 LitterHeroes Ambassadors working in their communities to eliminate littering, reduce waste and improve public space. Visit www.keepbritaintidy.org for more information.
