LOOK: Appeal launched to help family after home collapses

AN APPEAL has been launched to help a Rugby family whose home was reduced to rubble.

A two-storey extension at a house in Claremont Road collapsed on Tuesday (September 10) while building work was being carried out on a neighbouring house.

No-one was home at the time – but the family living there as tenants are now in temporary accommodation.

Two of the childrens’ bedrooms and the kitchen are gone, while a remaining bedroom has been left hanging precariously over the rubble.

And with the unsafe remains cordoned off, the family have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Launching an online fund-raising appeal, a friend of the family says they desperately need help.

M Rodriguera said: “Thank God it happened when there was nobody in the house and they are all safe.

“They are in temporary accommodation at the moment and they are only able to have the clothes they are wearing.

“The children only have their uniforms and school bag with them. Imagine their shock coming from home from school seeing their house in ruins.

Rodriguera described the family as close friends who help those in need, adding: “I personally know them for half of my life and consider them my extended family.

“I always say that one of their greatest traits is to make everyone they come across feel that they are friends and family.

“Urgent access to funds is needed. Let us rally support for them and their family at a time of their greatest need.”

A spokesman for Rugby Borough Council said: “Officers from Warwick Building Control arrived on site at a property in Claremont Road at around 7pm on Tuesday after receiving a report a two-storey extension on a terraced property had collapsed.

“Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Warwickshire Police attended the scene. The area was secured and a partial road closure put in place.

“At 2am on Wednesday, the gable end of the property collapsed. The property was empty throughout and nobody was injured.

“Officers from Warwick Building Control have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and have a site meeting with a structural engineer this morning to assess the property.

“Our Community Advice and Support Team has spoken to the tenants, who have accepted the council’s offer of accommodation.”
