LOOK: Families picnic on pitch as Rugby Lions kids collect end-of-season medals

FAMILIES picnicked on the pitch as young Rugby Lions Minis and Juniors players collected their end-of-season medals at the club’s Webb Ellis Road stadium.

The Minis and Juniors annual end of season gathering moved outside this year due to Covid restrictions – but the sun came out to make for an enjoyable day.

The Cubs section, for boys and girls aged two to five, took part in a rugby-themed obstacle course with their coaches and parents, while the Minis made plenty of noise playing a host of multi-sports on the pitch.

The Junior boys and girls joined together as rugby balls were replaced with water bombs – with players and coaches getting a soaking.

All sections then came together to receive their medals, with older members of the Cubs graduating to the Minis section and receiving their first match shirt, before families were invited to picnic on the pitch and play on bouncy castles.

Rugby Lions Minis and Juniors Chair Mark Foxon said: “It has been a very difficult year for all rugby clubs with many Covid interruptions during the season.

“Several of our previous players had moved onto different sports that were able to continue to function during lockdown and we wish them well, but we are really pleased with the way the player numbers are starting to increase.

“We have some fantastic volunteers who have been with the club many years and we are seeing some new volunteers. There is a very positive vibe within the section and the club and was great to see the clubhouse open again and being used throughout the day.”

The club is accepting bookings for free tester sessions in September for Cubs (aged two to five), Minis (school years one to three), Junior Girls (school years seven and eight) and the new Junior Boys Rugby Sevens team for boys in school years 10 and 11.
