A SHADOW cabinet member was among the thousands to attend Rugby’s fifth annual Food and Drink Festival, which spilled out into the streets for its biggest feast yet.

The festival was expanded from St Andrew’s Church gardens into Regent Street to provide more space for stalls, music and seating.

The venues were packed with hot and cold food stalls, a pop-up real ale bar, live music, family entertainment and children’s activities.

Masterchef runner-up Steve Kielty serve up seasonal produce and modern British dishes in the pop-up demonstration kitchen alongside other chefs.

Rugby First managing director Aftab Gaffar said: “I was really pleased with how the day went and it was great to see the town centre so busy – it was buzzing.

“This year we took the decision to expand the event into Regent Street to provide additional space and this worked very well. It also increased footfall to those businesses located in Regent Street which we had hoped it would do.

“I would like to thank all those businesses and individuals who supported the festival and also extend a special thank you to St Andrew’s Church for hosting the food fayre. A date for the 2018 festival will be announced shortly.”

Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott went along as part of the party’s National Campaign Day, when front bench MPs visited marginal constituencies around the country.

She said: “It was fantastic to visit Rugby – it’s a wonderful town with a great sense of community.

“Myself and other members in the Shadow Cabinet have been visiting those places that we need to win for form the next Labour government.

“The road to Downing Street goes right through Rugby. We saw 2,000 votes shaved of Mark Pawsey’s majority in June and I’m confident that Labour will win in Rugby at the next General Election.”
