THE M1 motorway near Rugby will be closed for two weekends during bridge maintenance and resurfacing work.
Two repair schemes will be carried out at the same time on the stretch between junctions 18 and 20.
The works, starting Monday, are set to be completed by the end of July. The motorway will be closed for two weekends and overnight while the work takes place to ensure the safety of workers and road users.
The work, taking place between the Crick interchange at junction 18 to the Misterton interchange at junction 20, will replace the existing waterproof system on the bridge at Shawell Walcote and resurface around two miles of the northbound and southbound carriageways.
Much of the work will take place overnight, from 10pm, when roads are quieter. Overnight closures are planned as follows:
M1 southbound junctions 20-19: Weekday nights between June 1 and 23
M1 northbound carriageway junctions 18-20: Three nights from June 24 to 26
M1 northbound junctions 19-20: Weekday nights between June 30 to July 17
In addition, the southbound carriageway will be closed from 10pm on Friday June5 until 6am 8 June. The northbound carriageway will be closed from 10pm on Friday July 10 until 6am on Monday July 13
Highways England Project Manager Steve Longden said: “We appreciate people’s patience while we carry out this important maintenance work which will improve the quality of journeys for drivers and ensure that the Shawell Walcote bridge is protected for the future.
“We understand that roadworks can be disruptive but are doing all we can to carry out these two schemes together to ensure minimum inconvenience for road users and local communities.”
Diversions, agreed with the local authority, will be clearly signed.
