A MOTORIST died on the M1 near Rugby this morning (Monday July 18) when he was hit by a car after his vehicle broke down.

At around 3.20am, a silver Toyota Previa collided with the rear of a stationary grey Mercedes in lane one of the M1 southbound, between Junction 17 and Watford Gap Services.

The driver of the Mercedes – a man in his 40s from Bedfordshire – was standing at the rear of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His four passengers were treated for minor injuries, along with the driver of the Toyota.

The southbound carriageway between Junctions 18 and 16 and the northbound carriageway between Junctions 16 and 18 were closed to allow for the emergency services to deal with the incident. Both are now re-opened.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam footage of the collision or the vehicle prior to the incident.
