Man's assault on partner left her in too much pain to cover injuries with makeup

A VIOLENT Rugby man battered his partner so badly that she could not even use makeup to cover the bruising to her face – because it was too painful.

And at Warwick Crown Court, Nicky Chamberlain, 43, of St Georges Avenue, Rugby, was jailed for 20 months after pleading guilty to charges of assault and affray.

Prosecutor Ian Speed said Chamberlain and his female partner had been together for 16 years, and had four children, but there had been incidents of domestic violence.

On March 4 she returned home and began a conversation with Chamberlain, who was inebriated, in the kitchen.

The discussion seemed to annoy Chamberlain who reacted angrily, and ‘she knew the signs, having been a victim of his violence before,’ said Mr Speed.

She tried to get away from him and to leave the kitchen, but he began to punch her.

One of the children, who were upstairs and heard her cry out, called the police.

In a bid to get away from Chamberlain, she clawed at his face, and managed to get outside, but he followed her and continued to punch her.

When the police arrived, Chamberlain, who had a number of previous convictions for violence and causing damage, was arrested and admitted the offences, explaining that he was drunk.

Mr Speed added that the victim said she could not even put makeup on to hide the marks to her face, because it was too painful to do so.

Jailing Chamberlain, Judge Peter Cooke told him that, with his record and the fact that the assault had taken place in the victim’s own home, it had to be an immediate sentence.
