Marital arts master from Rugby makes Taekwondo history

A MARTIAL arts master from Rugby has made history by becoming only the third person in England to achieve the highest level in Taekwondo.

Master Shahid Yousaf of Rugby Taekwondo Club has been awarded the 9th Dan Black Belt in the martial art, and now holds the title of Grandmaster.

He was presented with his certificate at Barby Village Hall by his instructor Master Murray Walker, who became England’s first European Champion of Taekwondo in the 1970s.

Over 50 past and present students came along to congratulate him, while Master Vendon Wright led the Tiny Tigers – including students as young as five – to perform for their Grandmaster.

Shahid has been training in Taekwondo for over 52 years. He began taking students over to Germany 40 years ago as part of the Rugby Russelsheim Twinning scheme.

Master Vendon Wright, 7th Dan Black Belt, has now taken over and wil be taking students to Germany next year to celebrate the 40th year Twinning anniversary.
