Martial arts students from German twin town enjoy knockout visit to Rugby

EUROPEAN relations are alive and well after students from a martial arts school in Rugby’s German twin town came to visit.

The Freestyle Martial Arts Association hosted 10 students from the WTF Olympic Taekwondo club in Rüsselsheim, for an annual sports twinning event.

It was the latest event of a 40-year tradition which has seen over 200 different sports clubs take part.

The two clubs went head to head with a sparring competition, a demonstration and a fun bowling competition. WTF Olympic won both the sparring and bowling sections and were able to hold onto the trophy for the second year in a row.

During the visit, the German students were shown around town, taken on a tour around London and visited Coombe Abbey.

Master Vendon Wright, 7th Dan Black belt and Chief instructor of the Freestyle Martial Arts Association, said it was a fantastic fun-packed weekend with good English weather, and all at the club were looking forward to the next event in 2020.
