Mayor and MP visit independent retailers and encourage residents to shop local for Christmas

INDEPENDENT shops in Rugby town centre welcomed some notable customers on Small Business Saturday.

Mayor Maggie O’Rourke, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey, and Rugby First Business Manager Linda Lowne showed their support for the campaign by visiting small businesses on Saturday (December 3).

Small Business Saturday highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’.

Coun O’Rourke, who chose supporting Rugby businesses as one of the themes of her Mayoral year, said: “Businesses large and small have faced significant challenges in recent years, and we can all show our support by shopping local this Christmas.

“Small independent businesses bring diversity to the high street and help create a unique sense of place, so I’d encourage everyone to put the town centre on their Christmas list and perhaps combine a shopping trip with a drink and a bite to eat at one of our fantastic independent cafes, restaurants, pubs or coffee shops.”

Mr Pawsey said: “As a former small business owner myself, I was delighted to show my support for Rugby’s small and independent businesses.

“Rugby has a number of unique retailers who can provide some really special gifts, especially for Christmas.”

Linda Lowne added: “We visited a number of small businesses including Just for the Record, Molino Coffee, Nuova, Hunts Bookshop, Rugby Electrical, It’s Time, Wild & Free, Umai Pan Asian Cuisine, The Scrum, The Copper Tree, Shine a Light, Abraxas, Terracotta and Eliza Doolittle.

“One small purchase can make a big difference to a small business, and I’d encourage everyone to support the town centre. Shopping local is for life not just for Christmas!”
