Mayor takes night on the town with Rugby's 'guardian angels'

RUGBY officials got a taste of the town’s night life.

Mayor Coun Belinda Garcia and Deputy Mayor Coun Tom Mahoney went on patrol with the Rugby Street Pastors.

The pastors are a volunteer church group responding to urban problems or who simply lend an ear to those feeling vulnerable on the streets at night.

The group has been operating for eight years and has expanded to nearly 40 volunteers. Each member undertakes a training programme to better help make Rugby a safer place.

During the patrol the guests visited nightclubs and pubs, and talked to door staff and clubbers.

Mayor Garcia said: “I found the whole experience a real eye opener. The presence of the Street Pastors in the town centre leads to a much calmer atmosphere in the town centre and I could see that people felt safer as a result.”

Group coordinator Pete Hickey said he was pleased his guests had gained an insight into the pastors’ work, and thanked them for joining the patrol during a particularly wet night.
