Mayor thanks town's horticultural heroes

Rugby Editorial 14th May, 2019   0

GREEN-fingered geniuses on Rugby Borough Council’s parks team have been presented with a ‘Simple Thank You’ by the Mayor of Rugby for helping the town blossom every spring.

Coun Tom Mahoney has followed the work of the council’s award-winning gardeners throughout his Mayoral year to find out the secrets of the team’s success.

Rugby has struck gold in the small city category of the Heart of England in Bloom Awards 11 years in a row and in 2018 did the double – winning overall gold to secure a place in this year’s national Britain in Bloom contest.

Five of the borough’s parks and green spaces currently hold prestigious Green Flag Awards – with Caldecott Park now a Green Flag Award-winner 11 years on the trot.

During his year in office, Coun Mahoney watched the team carrying out work at parks, green spaces and cemeteries across the borough.

He has also mucked in, joining the team at Croop Hill Cemetery to help out with maintenance work.

Coun Mahoney said: “Watching the team at work during my Mayoral year has been a revelation.

“Our gardeners go the extra mile to make sure we have some of the best parks and green spaces in the country, and I’ve been struck by the team’s passion and dedication.

“While it’s great this hard work has received national recognition and numerous awards, residents and visitors to the town reap the best reward of being able to enjoy our parks all year round.”

Coun Mahoney launched his Simple Thank You campaign at the start of his Mayoral year to highlight the work of individuals and organisations who serve Rugby’s communities.
