Money raised at church funday sent to Hurricane Irma victims

A CHURCH has generously donated money raised for its own expansion appeal to victims of Hurricane Irma.

A family fun day has moved St Peter and St John’s Church one step closer to achieving Project Welcome – a plan to develop the church hall into a community hub by opening up the original front entrance.

But some of the £600 raised at the event was sent to victims of the storm which devastated parts of the USA and the Caribbean.

Rev Sheila Bridge said: “We only had one short heavy shower during our event, so we were glad to be able to help those victims of bad weather.”

Around 300 people went to the event at the Clifton Road church on Saturday (September 9), where they learned more about Project Welcome.

Andy Duncan, a regeneration expert working with the church, presented feedback from a survey which had been completed by over 170 local people.

Visitors were treated to food, a fire engine, face painting, a balloon release up into the ceiling of church, and a seaside display by Rugby Miniaturists.

The church has already received £60,000 in grants towards Project Welcome.

The church is expecting to begin building the first phase of the community hub this autumn.
