Motivated Rugby man to run 300 miles in memory of beloved grandmother

A MOTIVATED Rugby man who lost his grandmother to heart disease is hoping to tot up an impressive cash total as he takes on a 300-mile running challenge for charity.

Hardeep Heer is running around six-and-a-half miles a day between now and Easter Sunday in memory of Mohinder Kaur, who died last month.

He has already had more than £4,000 pledged for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and wants to raise as much as possible.

Mother of two and grandmother of five Mohinder worked as a kitchen assistant at University Hospital Coventry.

She lived with atrial fibrillation, which causes the heart to beat irregularly, and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, taking medication for the conditions.

But in October she was diagnosed with heart failure, which meant her heart was no longer able to pump blood around her body properly.

Mohinder, who lived in Coventry, spent several months in and out of hospital and her final time there left her considerably weaker.

While in hospital, she tested positive for Covid-19 but, after recovering, was discharged and returned home.

However, Mohinder was rushed to A&E last month when a haematoma in her kidney ruptured and she died on February 3, aged 79.

Hardeep, 27, said: “My grandmother was kind, loveable and really funny. She took joy in caring after others and always put other people before herself.

“She lived an extraordinary life. Aged five, she was forced to move from Pakistan to India during the partition.”

She moved to England aged 20 to marry Hardeep’s grandad Parkash Singh Heer. He died from cancer 30 years ago.

Hardeep added: “She loved her job and really settled in well.

“Losing her was really tough because she was such a big part of our family. It was all so sudden and unexpected.”

After seeing the impact of heart disease on his grandmother, and with other relatives also diagnosed with heart conditions, Hardeep was inspired to give back.

The chartered accountant began his challenge on February 17 and has already raised £4,000.

He said: “I’ve been getting myself up early in the mornings and running an average of six-and-a-half miles each day.

“Knowing the money I raise will go towards the BHF’s funding of life-saving research is giving me that extra motivation to complete this challenge and raise as much money as I can.”

Around 94,000 people are living with a heart and circulatory condition in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, and someone in the areas dies from the disease every four hours.

Karen Robinson, BHF fund-raising manager, said the charity was very grateful to Hardeep.
