MP quizzed by next generation of politicians

THE NEXT generation of political thinkers had a chance to quiz Rugby’s MP on life in Westminster and discuss the key issues of the day.

During a visit to Rugby High School, Mark Pawsey spoke to Year 12 and 13 politics students from both Rugby High and Lawrence Sheriff School about his role as an MP.

He also took their questions on issues including Brexit and Parliament’s declaration of a climate emergency.

Mr Pawsey said: “I am always very keen to hear from the younger generation and to talk to them about the issues which they are interested in. It’s always very clear that young people are really keenly engaged with the most important issues of the day and the students I spoke to at Rugby High School were no exception to this.

“I was particularly interested to talk to them about how we can respond as a country to climate change.

“This issue is one that a lot of young people have spoken to me about and I was really interested to hear their thoughts on the things we can do to deliver on our commitment for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, as well as working with other countries to tackle climate change.”

He also met with the school’s new head teacher Mark Grady, who showed him some of the recent developments at the school.

Mr Grady said: “I was very pleased to welcome Mark Pawsey MP to Rugby High School. It was a great opportunity to discuss with him the vital issue of school funding, the pressures of curriculum reform and grammar schools’ continued commitment to access for disadvantaged students.”
