MP welcomes plans to tackle hospital congestion

Rugby Editorial 11th Jun, 2014 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

PLANS to ease congestion around University Hospital have been welcomed by MP Mark Pawsey.

The £5.5million project will see alterations to two roundabouts, including one branded a death trap after a spate of car crashes.

The Hinckley Road and Brade Drive junction – by the Mount Pleasant pub – will be made bigger with a dedicated right-hand created for inbound traffic.

Also in the pipeline is a new road through the centre of the roundabout at Ansty Road and Clifford Bridge, with the aim of helping traffic towards the city centre. All arms of the roundabout will be controlled by traffic lights.

New toucan crossings will also be installed in Ansty Road to help cyclists while two existing crossings in Clifford Bridge Road will be upgraded.

Woodway Lane will be widened to two lanes towards the traffic lights – although work will not start until a separate batch of roadworks are finished – and a new slip lane will be built into the first hospital car park.

Work is expected to be finished in March next year.

“Since becoming Rugby’s MP in 2010 I have been contacted by many constituents regarding traffic congestion in and around UHCW.

“I am sure those of my constituents who use the hospital will be delighted at the news and I hope the work can be completed as soon as possible so that this long-standing problem can finally be addressed.”
