A CYCLIST is refusing to have the brakes put on her charity mission despite the theft of her two bikes.
Sam Hurdus had already raised nearly £11,000 for Myton Hospice this year alone before the thieves struck overnight on Saturday July 11 while her canal boat was moored in Stockton.
The bikes – a white Felt Z95 road bike with distinctive red tyres and a black Claud Butler Cape Wrath mountain bike –
together worth £1,000.
The 44 year-old told The Observer: “I’ve been raising money for Myton Hospice for over a year and I’ve hit a real speed bump in my efforts because of this. I just can’t believe someone would take them as its not a place where people usually walk by or have access to.”
“Luckily I was able to borrow a bike in the meantime from a close friend who knows how important these charity cycles are to me and the staff at Myton Hospice.”
Sam, who works as a housekeeper, will be taking part in the RideLondon 100 next month – a 100 mile cycle through Surrey to the capital – as well as cycling across the globe to India later this year.
Sam choose to support the hospice after seeing how they had helped a friend’s mother during her final days.
She had also undertaken several other charity activities using her bikes including cycling outside supermarkets and in shopping centres, as well as baking and selling cakes, and most recently helping to organise a new charity cycling event with Daventry Cycling Club, which raised nearly £4,500 for Myton Hospice.
Anybody with information on the stolen bikes is urged to contact police in Southam on 101. A reward is also being offered for their return.
