New children's book aims to encourage kindness

KINDNESS is at the heart of a new children’s book celebrating young carers.

Mum & Me: The Perfect Team has been written by Whitnash Primary School counsellor Fiona Sharpe to highlight the all too often unnoticed role played by an estimated 800,000 young carers in the UK.

And the mum-of-three was joined by headteacher Donna Ellison and pupils to mark the launch of the picture book.

It follows the journey of Katie, a young girl who helps care for her disabled mum. The story gently highlights the everyday responsibilities many young carers take on, and encourages understanding, compassion and emotional wellbeing.

Mrs Ellison said: “The story raises important awareness about young carers and shines a light on the kindness and empathy we encourage within our school community.”

As the school counsellor, Fiona supports children on a daily basis and sees first-hand how important recognition and kindness are for young carers.

She told The Observer: “Many young carers don’t realise the incredible strength and love they carry each day. I wanted this book to help them feel seen, supported, and proud of themselves.”

The book is part of Fiona’s wider work to promote emotional literacy, inclusion, and kindness within schools. She is also launching Katie’s Emotional Tool box which features various cards to help children recognise and talk about their own feelings and emotions.

Mum & Me: The Perfect Team is available from Amazon, Waterstones and other booksellers.

Fiona also welcomes enquiries for school workshops and author visits at www.bonnieheartsbooks.co.uk, from where the book can also be purchased.
