New exhibition explores climate change and consumer culture

Rugby Editorial 23rd Jan, 2020   0

CLIMATE change and consumer culture have inspired a new exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum.

The artists behind Fool’s Gold transform everyday waste and natural resources into pieces which question the value we invest in material goods and convenience, and the impact we have on the world around us.

Using everything from salt crystals to discarded crisp packets, artists Hayley Harrison and Pamela Schilderman fashion pieces which aim to generate conversations on the climate crisis and the impact of people’s lifestyles on the planet.

The gallery’s senior visual arts officer Sarah Holdaway said: “Climate change has dominated the headlines and global political debate in recent years, and Hayley and Pamela’s work challenges our relationship with the world around us while questioning our everyday consumer habits.

“The pieces featured in Fool’s Gold both entertain and engage, and we hope visitors feel inspired to join the conversation and question the role we all have to play in tackling climate change.”

Rugby Borough Council’s growth and investment spokeswoman Coun Jill Simpson-Vince said: “Rugby Borough Council made a cross-party commitment in July to take steps towards achieving carbon neutrality by declaring a climate emergency.

“This is a key issue for all of us and therefore we all have a role to play, and this new exhibition encourages us to think about what we consume, what we waste and what we can do.”

Fool’s Gold opens at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday (January 25) and runs until Saturday March 14.

The artists will visit the gallery to create an art installation on Saturday February 1, and host a talk about the inspirations behind the works on Tuesday March 3. Pamela Schilderman also holds a Make Your Own Wind Turbine science workshop on Friday February 21. Visit www.ragm.co.uk/foolsgold to book, or for more information.
