New exhibition keeps it in the family

FAMILY connections are at the heart of a new exhibition which launches with a bang this week.

Art at the Alex opens its new exhibition Between Us on Thursday (October 5) at a free event featuring live music, poetry, food and drink.

The exhibition will feature collaborative work by mother-and-daughter Warwickshire artists Dee and Nicky Luntley.

Joining them on the launch night to provide the music will be the trio Tricaoraoch, featuring Nicky on vocals, her dad Michael on guitar, and violinist Maura Barnett.

The event will also feature the first public reading of a children’s Christmas book currently being written by Michael and illustrated by Nicky, as well as work by 11 other local artists and makers displayed around the Alex.

Chris Pegler, Director and co-owner of Art at the Alex, said: “We want to show a variety of local creative talent here and are impressed with how Dee and Nicky Luntley work together and support each other.

“We are looking forward to a special evening when art, music and literature combine to showcase the talents of a very creative local family.”

Linda Lowne, Rugby First Business and Stakeholder Manager, added: “We are delighted to support this event and the work of the Alex. Rugby town centre has a huge amount to offer when it comes to art, culture and music, with Art at the Alex playing a key role in increasing footfall and awareness of the town centre.”

Art at the Alex was set up in 2022 at the former Alexandra Arms pub by local printmaker Steve Davies and fibre artist Chris Pegler as a place which, as well as being their studio/workspace, could provide a showcase, a creative space, and a meeting place for a network of Rugby artists and makers.

They focus on making art and craft visible to visitors through demonstrations, and try new types of events to inspire visitors, connect artists and ‘add an extra creative spin to the town’.

In the past year the James Street venue has showcased work by over 90 local artists.

The free launch event takes place on Thursday (October 5) from 4-8pm, with poetry and readings from around 4.30pm and music from 6pm.

Between Us runs throughout October. Email [email protected] or call 01788 438553 for more information.
