New group breaks down taboo of menopause over a cuppa

Rugby Editorial 24th Feb, 2020   0

THE TABOO of the menopause is being broken down over a cuppa thanks to an initiative which has come to Rugby.

The Menopause Cafe is a chance for women to come together and chat about how the menopause affects their mind, body, relationships and work.

Samantha Lee, who organised the Rugby branch’s first meeting, said it was encouraging to see women chatting openly about menopause.

She said “We had some great conversations about difficulties in the workplace, HRT and the current supply shortage, as well as exercise and mental health.”

She urged younger ladies in their 30s and 40s to consider coming along too.

“You’re never too young to learn about menopause and communication plays a key role,” she said. “Speak to your mum and ask what age she was when she went through the menopause. The average age is 51, but if your mother was a lot younger than this there is a very good chance that you will go through it at a younger age too, so be prepared.”

She was inspired by Rachel Weiss, who held the first Menopause Cafe in Perth, Scotland in 2017. Since then, several have sprung up throughout the UK.

Rachael said: “Unfortunately, many women feel that they should just ‘get on with’ the menopause, with some never talking to their friends or family about it, but the reality is that it affects all women.

“People can come along and just listen, or join in on the discussions, hopefully leaving with a clearer sense of the impact of the menopause on those who are experiencing it, alongside their families, friends and colleagues.”

The next Rugby Menopause Cafe will be held at CV22 in Lawrence Sheriff Street at 10.30am-12.30pm on Saturday March 21.
