New hi-tech kit to help diabetes patients at St Cross

HIGH-TECH glucose level monitors have been donated to St Cross Hospital to help around 2,000 diabetic patients.

The monitors are the first of their kind to be used in the area covered by the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Donated by the Friends of St Cross, the monitors are helping the team at the hospital’s Joan Cox Diabetes Centre to develop treatment plans for patients whose blood glucose levels fluctuate.

Diabetes specialist nurse Kim Swinhoe said: “Patients have a small implant inserted under the skin, which they don’t feel, and the small 24-hour monitor collects data for a week.

“When the monitor is returned we analyse the data and adjust the settings on the patient’s insulin pump or adjust their insulin regime which helps them to gain better diabetes control.

“The team at St Cross are delighted with this equipment as we are the first unit in the Trust to have this facility.

“We are also grateful for the donation of a new examination couch from the Friends. This has allowed us to use another room for consultations at the centre which has expanded significantly since it was opened and now has approximately 2,000 patients.”

Friends of St Cross chairman Willy Goldschmidt said: “It’s great to be able to help bring new technology to develop a service at St Cross. We are thrilled to learn that the team are leading the way with this equipment.”
