AN INNOVATIVE new project to celebrate Warwickshire’s rich tapestry of cultures and communities has been launched.

The Equality and Inclusion Partnership (EQuIP), in collaboration with Warwickshire County Record Office and Warwickshire County Council’s (WCC) Communications Department, has launched the Bridge to Belonging oral history project to coincide with International Migrants Day.

The project documents the powerful and poignant stories of refugees and asylum seekers who have made Warwickshire their home.

Through recorded interviews, participants share personal reflections on the concept of ‘home’ – detailing their journeys, challenges, and triumphs as they integrate into the local community.

Their stories will become a part of Warwickshire County Record Office’s permanent digital archive, ensuring their voices resonate for generations to come.

EQuIP Chief Executive Junaid Hussain said: “We are living in uncertain times, both nationally and internationally, where misinformation can create division and undermine the bonds we share as a community.

“Migration has enriched the fabric of Warwickshire, bringing diversity, innovation and resilience to our communities.

“The Bridge to Belonging project not only preserves these stories but also acts as a beacon of truth, fostering understanding and solidarity. It reminds us of the strength in human connection and the importance of welcoming new voices into our shared narrative.”

Warwickshire County Record Office will provide a secure and lasting home for these narratives, complementing its extensive archival collection that dates back to the 12th century.

Sharon Forman, Archivist at Warwickshire County Record Office, added, “We are honoured to safeguard these oral histories. They are an invaluable resource for researchers, educators and future generations, reflecting the evolving identity of Warwickshire.”

The WCC migration team collaborates to ensure people new to the region – including those who have experienced forced migration due to displacement, war, or persecution – can connect, thrive, and build positive futures.

Cathy Boyce, Team Manager for the Warwickshire County Council Migration Team, said: “This project and video highlights the incredible strength and courage of individuals who have made Warwickshire their home.

“Sharing these stories is a powerful way to foster understanding and celebrate the diversity that makes our communities thrive. We are proud to support such an inspiring initiative and ensure these voices are heard across the region.”
