NHS offers hay fever advice to Warwickshire sufferers

HAY fever advice is being issued to Warwickshire sufferers as the pollen count remains very high.

Hay fever symptoms can include sneezing, coughing, a runny or blocked nose, as well as red, itchy, or watery eyes. Sufferers can also experience headaches, earache or lose their sense of smell.

And NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board is reminding the public to take steps to manage their hay fever, as well as other seasonal illnesses,

Those experiencing symptoms of hay fever should ensure that they have the correct medicines to manage their symptoms, and those that use inhalers are reminded to check that they are in-date.

Pharmacies are also able to offer advice and support. If symptoms worsen, or do not improve after taking medicines from the pharmacy, then a GP can advise on the best course of treatment.

Dr Angela Brady, chief medical officer at NHS Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, said: “Pollen levels are extremely high at the moment, which is causing an increase in hay fever symptoms. Because of this we have seen an increase in people seeking medical help this week.

“We’d like to remind the public that the NHS website has a range of advice on how to manage symptoms, and if you do need medical support your local pharmacy will be able to provide advice and over the counter medication if needed.

“We are also currently experiencing a prolonged period of hot weather. It’s important that everyone takes care in hot weather, including drinking plenty of fluids and staying out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day. Please remember to check on family and friends who may be more at risk during hotter temperatures.”

With anticipated pressure on local NHS services, local people are asked to carefully consider their healthcare options over the coming days. If people are unsure of which service is most appropriate for their needs, they are advised to visit 111.nhs.uk.
