No place like care home: residents welcome new scarecrow neighbours

THERE’S no place like home for residents of a Rugby care home which has welcomed some familiar new faces.

Residents and staff at Jim Gillespie House have recreated characters from the Wizard of Oz as part of a scarecrow competition.

The Abbeyfield Society, the charity that oversees Jim Gillespie House, has been running its Scarecrow Challenge in over 300 of its care homes, sheltered housing schemes and independent living complexes across the UK.

As well as Winnie the Pooh and Peter Rabbit, the Dunchurch Road care home chose to recreate Dorothy – complete with ruby slippers – alongside the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.

Residents and staff posed with the scarecrows outside the home, and also created a scarecrow resident and carer in an effort to recruit some extra staff.

Anna Boyes, Abbeyfield’s Director of Marketing, said: “We wanted to devise an autumnal competition that allowed our talented staff and residents to show a bit of creative flair.

“The scarecrows help to put our houses and homes on the map, and will hopefully become a quirky feature that will attract the attention of passers-by.”
