O'Gara among rugby greats to be inducted at Hall of Fame next week

IRELAND’S record points scorer Ronan O’Gara is among the rugby stars being inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame at a special ceremony next week.

The ceremony on Wednesday (September 12) will also officially welcome Liza Burgess (Wales), Stephen Larkham (Australia), Pierre Villepreux (France) and Bryan Williams (New Zealand).

O’Gara, Burgess, Villepreux and Williams will all attend the ceremony – and visitors to the Hall of Fame can meet the inductees and get autographs.

The ‘meet and greet’ session with the inductees takes place from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

Before the session, a private ceremony takes place in the Hall of Fame where Gus Pichot, vice-chairman of World Rugby, and Australian rugby legend and Hall of Famer John Eales will present the 2018 inductees with the prestigious Hall of Fame caps and pins.

Bill Beaumont, chairman of World Rugby and Hall of Fame inductee, said: “The World Rugby Hall of Fame importantly acknowledges and celebrates the true legends of the game, celebrating those who have made outstanding contributions throughout their careers while embodying rugby’s values.

“On behalf of the rugby family we would like to congratulate this year’s five new inductees as they are recognised and honoured for their immense contributions to rugby.

“Each have left their mark on the sport and through their achievements and character, inspired millions to play and support rugby worldwide, and we look forward to honouring them.”

The World Rugby Hall of Fame, based in the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum building, celebrates rugby’s greats and the moments which defined the sport.

Visitors can use HD touchscreen technology to explore the game’s history, from its humble origins to a global sport played by millions around the world.

Coun Michael Stokes, leader of Rugby Borough Council, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming the 2018 inductees to the birthplace of the game and the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

“Since opening, the Hall of Fame has welcomed rugby legends from around the world and I’m delighted residents have the chance to meet the latest inductees at next week’s ceremony.”
