Old dogs can learn new tricks, says Warwickshire rehoming centre

YOU can teach an old dog new tricks – that is the Easter message from a Warwickshire dog rehoming centre.

Three older dogs currently in the care of Dogs Trust Kenilworth are on a mission to prove that, while they may not be spring chicks, age is just a number and they still have plenty to offer new owners.

The Honiley based charity currently has 22 dogs aged over six years old who are looking for a retirement home to call their own – including golden girls, Whitney, Storm and Lucy.

Emma-Jane Thomas, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Kenilworth, said: “Sometimes older dogs can be overlooked in favour of younger pups, but dogs like our golden girls, Storm, Lucy and Whitney, deserve just as much attention and care as their younger counterparts.

“There are many advantages to welcoming an older dog into your life. Often older dogs don’t need quite as much exercise, although senior canines can be just as fun and playful.

“They are more likely to be house-trained and, as they are older and wiser, they usually know other training basics too, but you can certainly still teach an older dog new tricks.”

Whitney is a seven year old Akita cross who arrived at the rehoming centre in November. Staff have found her to be a sensitive soul who takes her time to warm up to new people.

She loves a gentle walk around the fields and is looking for a quiet peaceful retirement home to relax in. She loves watching the world go by and would love a garden of her own where she can sunbathe and relax.

Eight year old Storm, also an Akita, was rehomed by the charity in 2021, but returned to Dogs Trust kennels earlier this year. She is a firm favourite with staff, who describe her as a lovely lady who loves meeting people.

Storm will need a patient and understanding home with owners who will guide her with her training as she is not keen on being left alone. She could share her new home with another calm dog and children over 11 years old.

Lucy is a 12 year old Border Collie who came to Dogs Trust Kenilworth in August 2023. She is a sweet, sensitive lady who will need her new family to make a few visits to meet her at the centre as she can be worried by new people.

Lucy is looking for an adult only home as she has been quite sensitive with new people. She loves to play with toys and long walks, and would make a lovely companion who will curl up for a snooze at your feet.

Emma-Jane added: “While we celebrate Easter and all the new life that comes with it, don’t forget about the older pups in our care who still have so much to offer new owners.”
