A NEW running track fit for an Olympian awaits children at a primary school when they return from their summer holidays.

The new AstroTurf track at Kilsby CE Primary School was officially opened by professional freestyle skier Katie Summerhayes – who has competed in two Winter Olympic Games – at the school’s end-of-term sports day.

Katie attended to cut the ribbon thanks to housebuilder Persimmon Homes, which supported the sports day and has a partnership with Team GB.

Head teacher Georgina Sensecall said: “We were over the moon to welcome Katie Summerhayes to our sports day.

“Along with a couple of the children, Katie cut the ribbon on our new sports track which we are very excited about.

“We’re very proud of our sporting facilities at the school and it was a pleasure to show Katie round and introduce her to the parents and children.

“I was overwhelmed to see Katie’s involvement in the whole day. She stayed for the duration of the event, handing out medals, motivating the kids and really getting stuck in wherever she could.”

Katie, who began learning to ski aged six, added: “I had an absolutely fabulous day getting involved with the sports day at Kilsby Primary School.

“It took me back to my sports days which were always the highlight of the school year for me.

“I think it’s so important for children to be inspired by sport at an early age. It’s always been my aim to compete at a high level, and to become a positive influence on those who share the same goals as me.

“The children were all amazing, and it was incredible to see the school investing in sporting facilities which will help young athletes to enjoy sport in a safe and modern environment.”

Sarah Read, of Persimmon Homes Central, said: “We are always looking to give back to the communities which we build in and getting involved in local school sports days enables us to inspire future generations to aim high.

“Katie is a role model to us all. Her positive attitude and willingness to get involved throughout the day was extremely admirable to watch.”
