Opticians focus on fund-raising for Ghanaian village

Rugby Editorial 6th Jun, 2019   0

A FOCUS on raising funds for a Ghanaian village has seen opticians in Lutterworth hit their target of £12,000.

Staff from Specsavers in Lutterworth began the initiative for the Ashanti Development Project in 2017.

They hit their target when 72 colleagues, friends and family members raised £875 through ticket sales and a raffle at a fund-raising evening.

The money will fund a community centre and eye care in the village of Mpantuase.

Alongside staff from Specsavers in Hinckley, the Lutterworth store has supported the charity for 15 years.

Store director Abhijit Roy said: “The team has shown real grit, creativity and team spirit in getting us to our fund-raising target. We’ve enjoyed quizzes, skittle tournaments, sports events and curry nights, to name just a few.

“Now that all our hard work has paid off, it feels fantastic. The Ashanti Development Project is a very special cause for us, because of our long standing relationship and the changes we’ve seen there as a result of our fund-raising so far. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way.”

The Ashanti Development Project runs eye clinics and screens for common eye conditions, providing glasses for those who need them. Patients who show signs of cataracts are also offered support and a surgeon visits when numbers are sufficient to run a specialist clinic.
