Paralympian star opens primary school's new running track

PUPILS at a primary school are running rings around their teachers after a Paralympian star opened its new All-Weather Track.

Children at Bilton C of E Junior School can now tackle their Wednesday marathon challenge and daily mile routine all year round.

They had extra reason to be excited when Paralympian skier Anna Turney, who has represented Great Britain at the top level in her sport for seven years, visited to open the track alongside Mayor Tom Mahoney.

The project was kick-started when local Tesco shoppers voted for it to recieve funding raised from the 5p bag charge at the supermarket.

Further funding was given by Rugby Round Table, Sports Premium and the school’s parent-teacher association.

Pupils also raised £3,000 for the project at a sponsored walk in November.

The result is a striking purple 250m running track which spans the school field.

Excited pupils included Tiahnae, who said: “It makes a big difference to us. We know which way we are going, and it helps us to exercise everyday.”

Lena said: “I love the track and it helps you get fit in a fun way.” Ellie added: “It keeps us fit and helps us to make new friends.” And Luke said: “It helps is to work together and co-operate.”

Deputy head teacher Kate Webb championed the project for the school.

She said: “We pride ourselves on giving our children every opportunity to participate in outdoor activities, not just during their PE lessons, but also before school and break times too. This track is an amazing resource for the school and will offer new and varied outdoor activities for us all year round.”

Head teacher Alexandra Norton said: “We are incredibly grateful to all of our amazing parents, carers and children, who have helped raise funds for the track and who sponsored the school through the Tesco community project during the summer.

“Special thanks also go to the school PTA and Rugby Round Table for their amazing donations.”
