Pervert Grandfather from Rugby jailed for 12 years for sexually abusing grandchildren

A MOTHER was horrified when her six-year-old daughter innocently described how her grandfather sexually assaulted her.

At Warwick Crown Court, her perverted grandfather was found guilty of six charges of causing her to engage in sexual activity and one of assaulting her by penetration.

The jury also convicted him of sexually assaulting another grandchild – a young boy.

The 56-year-old Rugby man, who cannot be named to protect his victims’ identities, was jailed for 12 years and made to register as a sex-offender for life.

Prosecutor Peter Arnold told the court how the defendant would babysit for the grandchildren when his wife was away.

And in Spring last year, as her mother was getting her ready for school the girl spoke about her granddad asking her to touch him.

Thinking it was a misunderstanding, the mother asked what she meant, and her daughter pointed at her partner’s private area.

The couple took the girl to school where they spoke to the head and police and social services were contacted as a result.

When an officer spoke to the girl, she revealed how she touched her grandfather’s penis and added a grandson had also been present on one occasion.

When the boy was interviewed separately he described a ‘remarkably similar’ event.

Judge Sylvia de Bertodano told the defendant: “You are the grandfather of two very small children, and you used that position to inflict acts of sexual abuse on them for your own sexual gratification.

“It may be because of that you deluded yourself into thinking you were not causing them any harm, but memories of this sort of abuse can cause horrific long-term psychological effects.

“I hope steps can be taken so they do not suffer the pain and misery that many adults I see who faced abuse as children suffer for all of their lives.

“This is made worse because you are their grandfather. Family bonds should be the strongest in a child’s life, and the trust children put in family members should be answered by care and love and protection.

“There can be no more devastating breach of trust than when a grandfather abuses his own grandchildren.”
